A study of the swiss Schmidt-Rubin M1889. (Gazette 19 - Article 1)

Development of the various Swiss M1889 knife bayonets for the Schmidt-Rubin Rifle began with the Swiss Experimental Bayonet SIG M1889.
This extremely rare prototype bayonet combined a Vetterli style hilt with a new short blade. All metal is finished bright. The hilt has smooth brown wooden grips, fastened with 3 small rivets.
The press stud is activated by a flat spring fastened with a screw. The crossguard is a simplified Vetterli style, without the usual stud guide prongs. My example is numbered “81” on the obverse side. The blade is single-edged, fullered and marked “S.J.G. NEUHAUSEN” on the obverse fuller. The scabbard is unique, the entire body including finial is formed leather with a black painted finish...
