Observations in Crete. (Gazette 19 - Article 4)

An October holiday in Rethymnon, Crete was meant to revitalise two weary parents after their daughter’s wedding. But of course the hunt for bayonets never ceased!
Even the first walk into the winding alleyways of the old Moorish city beneath its commanding Venetian ‘fortezza’ on the headland gave clues to a violent military past.
Standing proudly beneath the Greek flag in Iroon Square was a warrior effigy to represent an unknown soldier. His uniform, casque Adrian & Lebel Rifle looked decidedly French. Although carved from white stone, so no colour details were obvious, it seems that these items were adopted during the Greco-Turkish War (1915-1922).
